Bashley (Rydal) are being strongly tipped as the major challengers to 2021 ECB Southern Premier League champions South Wilts this season – but their prospects of making a winning start to the campaign may have been dulled by the presence of Northants all-rounder Gareth in the Lymington line up.
Berg is not playing in Northants’ current County Championship match against Surrey at the Oval having been “been rotated out of the squad to manage the bowler workloads through the packed early season schedule.”
Eager to keep his eye in – he celebrated a five-wicket haul against Yorkshire last month and has twice made recent 60-plus scores down the order – Berg has opted to play at the BCG.
It will be his second Lymington appearance, having debuted and made a match winning contribution with the bat at Alton last season.
New skipper Terry Crabb will make his first appearance of the season following an untimely hamstring injury, while left-hand spin all-rounder Darren Cowley, now 45, is set to make his first Lymington appearance since 2019. There is no sign of Matt Metcalfe.
England Under-19 ICC World Cup captain Tom Prest will make his Bashley (Rydal) SPL debut alongside recent past Academy all-rounder Harry Broderick, who journeys down from his north Hampshire home in Fleet to play for the New Forest club, so as to be eligible for Dorset.
Perhaps Bashley’s biggest boost is the return of left-arm seamer Brad Currie, who has not played for the club since the opening match of 2021 when he wrecked South Wilts with a five-wicket new ball spell.
Mitch Wilson is ruled out with a calf strain, so Lord’s indoor sixes match winner Sam Crisp comes in.
Bashley (Rydal): Digby, Prest, Broderick, Porter, Gordon, Jacques, Saif, Goodey, Crisp, Currie, Fletcher.
Lymington: Crabb, C Moors, Scott, Berg, Royan, Hartshorn, Cox, Cowley, Wheble, K Moors, Morgan.
