Fawley must win tomorrow’s Waterside derby against Hythe & Dibden at Holbury if they are to see off a late threat from Hambledon to seize the Southern Premier League Division 3 runners-up promotion spot behind champions Bashley (Rydal) II.
Hambledon’s five-wicket win there last weekend gives the historic village club an outside chance of promotion, but that largely depends on them taking maximum points off Tichborne Park at Ridge Meadow and Fawley faltering in the derby. Fawley are effectively 12 points ahead going into the final round of matches.
Spencer le Clerq and George Marshall rose to the occasion for Hambledon, who chased down Fawley’s 219 all out to win with six overs to spare.
Le Clerq returned a competitive career-best 6-55 as Fawley fell from 158-3 (Jon Lush 53) to 219 all out – a total Hambledon polished off with six overs to spare, Marshall (89) sharing consecutive half-century partnerships with Le Clerq (33) and Eton College’s Harry Thistlethwayte (37).
Hythe & Dibden rattled up a sizeable 308-4 against relegated Lymington II, with Tom Gates blasting three sixes and 14 fours in his 113. Gates shared century stands with Matt Young (47) and Zach Millar (67 not out) in the Hythe run spree.
Lymington sagged to 44-5 before Trevor Phillips (40), batting far too low, and Ross Whyte (25) gave their final 165 an air of respectability. Wayne Royan and Andy Wakely shared six of the Lymington wickets.
