Talented St Cross Symondians all-rounder Matt Stokes, pictured, was named Player of the Tournament after helping his native Guernsey finish in third place in the six-nation ICC World League Division 5 competition in Jersey.
The Southampton Solent University youngster batted and bowled consistently, scoring 247 runs, including a top score of 82 which paved the way to Guernsey’s third-place victory over the Pacific Ocean island of Vanuatu.
“The standard of cricket in the tournament was spread out,” Stokes admitted.
“Jersey (the winners) and Oman, who beat Ireland in the ICC twenty20 in India earlier this year, were very decent. Vanuatu were almost on a par with us and Nigeria and Tanzania were the weakest teams, so Guernsey were probably positioned right in third place.”
Stokes is set to return to the St Cross Symondians side against Lymington, after which he’ll head up to Grace Road to link up with former Hampshire skipper Nic Pothas, who is now Leicestershire’s Academy Director.
Pothas coached Stokes while he was Guernsey’s Director of Cricket and was quick to offer him the opportunity to continue his development in the East Midlands.
“I’m not sure what is happening re club cricket whether I stay up in Leicester or travel back to play for St Cross Symondians,” said Stokes. Picture Martin Gray.
