Max Smith was only able to grab two hours sleep after jetting back from a party-strewn Ibiza holiday – but it didn’t prevent him from scoring a century against Berkshire which helped steer Hampshire Seniors into the quarter-finals of the ECB 50-plus County Championship.
Smith’s 136, which pointed Hampshire to a towering 282-9, was his third Seniors hundred of the summer. He has also made two more for Old Tauntonians & Romsey in the Hampshire League.
He hit a six and 20 boundaries in his century and shared a 143-run second-wicket partnership with Chris Wheeler (43) as Hampshire batted Berkshire out of the match.
New Milton’s Nick Gargaro took 6-53 as Berkshire were dismissed for 139.
Hampshire’s 60s side piled up 274-6 – but still lost their Seevent National Over-60s Championship match to Kent by 21 runs.
Waterlooville’s Geoff Beale made 112 and partnered Mike Swain (80) in a 175-run stand as Hampshire tried in vain to chase down Kent’s 295-5 at Gravesend.
Blackheath left-hander Chris Swadkin, who made a century against Hampshire at the Hogs ground last month, was man-of-the-match, scoring 159 and later taking 3-57.
