The dust had barely settled on Kevin Nash celebrating his 400th Southern Premier League wicket when the evergreen Bashley (Rydal) seamer was told another bowling milestone was at his finger tips.
The 41-year old etched his name in Premier League annals when he had St Cross Symondians opener Tom Foyle caught at slip to become only the sixth bowler to achieve the feat.
He finished Bashley’s crushing 197-run victory with a timely 4-27 return.
“It was timely too, because I’d been stuck on 399 since the end of last season,” Nash laughed.
“I didn’t expect to have to wait till mid-June before I took my first SPL wicket of the season, but it’s nice to have your name up there among the leading bowlers.”
Dan Goldstraw, Julian Ballinger, Richard Hindley, James Hibberd and Matt Metcalfe are the other bowlers to have taken 400 or more Premier League wickets.
Nash went with Bashley to Andover today with 403 scalps dangling from his belt – but that tally doesn’t include the wickets he took playing in the old Southern League.
“As a long haired Brockenhurst College student, I was part of the Bashley team that won the Hampshire League back in the mid-1990s and actually made my Southern League debut in 1995, ironically against South Wilts,” he recalled.
Premier League stats-man Mike Rose reveals Nash took 83 wickets for Bashley between 1995 and 1999, when the competition became ECB accredited.
“If my maths are correct then, I’ve got 485 wickets in total, so I’ll have to try and stay fit and try and get those last 15 this season,” he smiled.
“I’ll have to ensure the selectors know as competition for new-ball places is hot now we’ve got Bradley Currie and Tom Barber in the same attack – but hopefully there’s room for an experienced 41-year old right armer.”
