Ben Firrell (48) and Richard Barrett (47) shared a courageous late century partnership to take Basingstoke & North Hants to within a whisker of a remarkable NatWest Under-16 Indoor League victory over Parley at the Ageas Bowl.
Basingstoke appeared almost out for the count when they sank to 33-4 in response to Parley’s daunting 164-1.
But Firrell (right) and Barrett (left) came together in the fifth over and put on an astonishing 120 before being parted.
They took Basingstoke to 153 – and 12 runs short of victory – before Firrell was run out. Barrett followed soon after with the Bountymen 156 all out, only eight runs behind.
Parley celebrated a double, also beating the Isle of Wight, who posted 148-3 but allowed a promising situation to slip through some weak bowling.
Dan Cox, Joe Butcher and George Niemiec scored the bulk of the IWCB runs, but Parley raced home without losing a wicket.
A little disheartened, the Island youngsters also lost – by 37 runs – to Basingstoke, with Cox and Niemiec both making 30-plus scores, but the 157 target was never threatened.
