Tom Scriven was spectacularly run out just two runs short of a maiden ECB British Gas Southern Premier League for the Hampshire Academy.
But his 98, scored during a century third-wicket stand with England Under-19 batsman Felix Organ, paved the way for the Academy’s 23-run win over Alton.
The pair came together after two new ball blows left the Hampshire youngsters 25-2.
They added 174, the grassy Jubilee Ground outfield making boundary scoring difficult – the pair piercing the rope only 12 times: 126 of their stand being physically run !
Scriven, pictured by Roy Honeybone, was run out for 98 (seven fours) one handed by a sprawling Hugo Hammond at 197-3.
Organ followed 11 runs later for 94 (five fours), after which George Pardoe spanked a quick 25 not out to ease the Academy to 251-6.
The Academy sent down 30 overs of spin, reducing Alton to 97-5 (Alex Hammond 32) before the Heffernan brothers Mark (59), Michael (23) and South African Sean Jamison (44 not out) eased their reply to 228-7, Felix Organ taking 2-22 of his ten overs.
