Will Kerr is set to skipper Hartley Wintney in Southern Premier League Division 2 this summer – even though it will entail close on a 250-mile round trip each weekend to travel back from Birmingham University, where he began a business management degree course last autumn.
The teenage top order batsman and wicketkeeper, pictured in action by Dave Vokes, will take over the captain’s armband from Rhys Batcup when Hartley Wintney open their campaign against St Cross Symondians II on May 4.
Kerr has played for HW since he was ten years of age and was a regular batsman/keeper in Hampshire’s junior age group teams.
He has made over 800 SPL runs in the past two seasons, hitting a maiden century against Trojans in 2017 and snapping up over 40 victims behind the stumps.
Even though it is the off season and he’s a Fresher student, Kerr has wasted little time in creating a niche for himself in university cricket and will play for Birmingham in the upcoming BUCS indoor sixes northern finals at Old Trafford on Saturday week, February 2.
He will be joined at Hartley Wintney this summer by teenage South African off-spinner Jason Knibbs, who will be the club’s overseas player.
The 19-year old spinner has played junior representative age group cricket for Gauteng and hails from the same St Stithians College in Johannesburg as Kagiso Rabada, the South Africa pace bowler.
Knibbs has been a prominent player for St Stithians, taking an exceptional 5-8 in 3.3 overs to set up an eight-wicket victory over Hudson Park in the final of the 2016/17 Coca-Cola Schools T20 Challenge in Stellenbosch. He is taking a gap year away from his university studies in Pretoria.
