Rob Newman, left, was seven runs shy of a century at Sarisbury Athletic a week earlier, but didn’t miss out a second time, scoring an unbeaten 104 to set up an important 18-run victory for Old Tauntonians & Romsey over Hook & Newnham Basics.
OTs were wobbling at 40-3 after Richie Willock (5-29) had ripped through the top order, when Newman struck his match-winning century.
He struck only five boundaries in a patient hundred which, with Stuart Tognarelli (37) in initial support, effectively saw the OTs score doubled and later in partnership with Keith Trodd (20) saw 240-8 posted.
Danny Mogg (4-39) cut deep into Hook’s batting, reducing the visitors to 98-6 before half-centuries by Jordan Hobday (55) and Rhodes Franklin (54) enabled them to reach an eventual 224 (Shane Brewer 29), the side being dismissed with nine balls remaining.
The win took OTs above Ventnor in the log – the islanders suffering an amazing collapse at Loperwood Park, where Calmore Sports beat them by 44 runs.
Chasing a formidable 261-6 to win, Ventnor eased to 146 without loss through opening pair Tom Friend (80) and Harry Dye (77).
But, once parted, Ventnor fell to pieces. Dom Ducillier (5-17) and Mike West (4-27) sent all ten wickets crashing for the addition of 71 runs as the visitors nose-dived to 217 all out.
With extras contributing 24, the other nine Ventnor batsmen made just 34 runs between them. Earlier, James Manning (70), Mark Lavelle (47) and Sam Moss, with 41 not out, took Calmore to 261-6.
Ventnor now lie second from bottom, with only Hartley Wintney beneath them. Hartley’s bowling was flayed for 326-9 by Portsmouth, with Australian Fraser Hay hitting 108 and Vickram Dawson a subsequent 50. HW sank to 106 all out, Andrew Marston taking 5-18 and Hay finishing the day’s work with a 3-28 return.
