It’s crunchtime for the two table-topping Hampshire Seniors cricket teams in the next 24 hours.
On Tuesday afternoon at Hursley Park (1.30), the 60s face Sussex needing to regain their winning impetus in the Seevent national Over-60s Championship.
They are top of their eight-county South group, but had their position weakened by a crushing seven-wicket defeat by Kent at Warnford.
Jon Floyd (53), Terry Morton (42) and Paul Kerley (41) all made decents starts without going on to make a big score and Hampshire found themselves unable to defend a below par 203-5 off 45 overs.
Blackheath left-hander Chris Swadkin, one of the leading Kent League cricketers in his pomp, reigned supreme with an unbeaten 127 as the visitors raced home with 12 overs to spare.
Hampshire v Sussex: Beale, Swain, Morton, Hall, Floyd, Kerley, Wood, Yorke, Paine, Smallbone, Bridle.
On Wednesday (1pm), Devon’s unbeaten seniors put heir unblemished start on the line against Hampshire, who top the ECB 50-plus County Championship group after an impressive 75-run win over the Channel Islands in Jersey.
OTs & Romsey all-rounder Max Smith was the start of the show at Granville, hitting 133 and later taking 4-32 with his off-spin.
His 133 contained three sixes and 13 fours and was scored during a near double-century stand with Hook & Newnham’s Graeme Buckingham (82).
Basingstoke’s Keith Harsham weighed in with 37 before taking 3-57.
The Channel Island, who included former Sparsholt opener Richard Headington, replied with 226-9.
