Sarisbury Athletic blasted 306-4 off 45.4 overs to pull off an astonishing six-wicket win over Southern Premier Division 1 newcomers Sparsholt – having been 47-3 in the early stages of their reply !
Ton-up Tom Nightingale was Sarisbury’s hero, sharing significant partnerships with Josh Hill and Chris Sanders as the visitors chased down Sparsholt’s 302-6 with 26 balls to spare.
Jeremy Frith (57) and Michael Haworth (26) have Sparsholt a solid start, but the main impetus came from Oli Perrin, whose 89 on debut contained five maximums and eight fours.
With Dave Banks (34) and Sam O’Brien (43 not out) chipping in, Sparsholt climbed to what appeared a match winning 302-6 – a target significantly stiffened when Ricky Rawlings, Sam Floyd and Dan Clouting were sent back to the Norman Edwards Ground pavilion with less than 50 runs on the electronic scoreboard.
But the tide turned quite dramatically when the shine wore off the ball, with Nightingale taking control, scoring an unbeaten 112, including six sixes and nine fours.
He added 110 with Hill (54) and then an unbroken 149 with Sanders, who finished with 66 not out as Sarisbury cruised home.
The match produced a staggering 608 runs, 18 sixes and 58 fours – and a few broken bowlers’ hearts !

Hook & Newnham Basics didn’t make the best of starts at Loperwood Park and were 33-3 at one stage against Calmore Sports, Australian all-rounder Will McNeill taking two of the wickets.
But Hook bat in some depth. Josh and Matt Buckingham, Martyn James (all 24), Rhodes Franklin (34), and former Paultons all-rounder Jack Murrell (29) all made handy scores. Basics reached 212, Ben Perry (4-50) and Charlie Gent (3-24) producing handy figures.
James, making his HNB debut after his pre-season move from Basingstoke & North Hants, took 3-9 as Calmore stumbled to 51-5. James Manning (57) and Perry (34) initiated a recovery, doubling the total but spinner Franklin (3-25) returned to complete a fine day as the hosts were dismissed for 174.
Portsmouth are harbouring promotion ambitions and a 46-run win over New Milton at St Helen’s proved a positive start.
Ben Duggan (73) underpinned Portsmouth’s 253-5, which was enhanced by a lively 61 not out from Matt Shaw and James Holder, 30 not out on debut.
Ryan Beck (70) and Luke Mortimore (30) steered New Milton to 90 without loss, but the innings fell away to 207 all out against Fahad Ahmed (3-24) and Dan Wallis (4-53).
