OILMEN LUBRICATE WATERLOOVILLE'S TITLE PROSPECTS

28/8/2017

Fawley’s surprise 52-run win over Basingstoke & North Hants seconds means that Waterlooville need only three points to become British Gas Southern League Division 3 champions.
Ironically, the Ville collect them when they visit May’s Bounty for a match Basingstoke themselves must win to prevent Bashley (Rydal) from burgling the runners-up spot.
Bashley are only five points behind after a two-wicket win at Gosport Borough.
New Zealander Matt Brown played a key role as Fawley, still not mathematically safe from relegation, pulled off a shock result.
The Kiwi top scored with 35 in Fawley’s 157 and then shared a six-wicket haul with Adam Freeman – both took 3-21 – as the Bountymen were skittled for a dismal 105 (Scott Dyer 32).
Basingstoke’s defeat played right into the hands of Waterlooville, who moved into a 20-point lead after a hard earned 23-run win over relegated Hursley Park.
The Ville were rocking at 35-3 before Tasmanian James Hortle (66) steadied the slide and from 149-4 set up a platform for Jon Hudson (33) and Alex Shephard (25) to put the leaders into a winning position.
Once again, Hursley Park didn’t go down without a fight – Matt Branford (47) and Paul Marks (40) making them scrap for their eventual success. Hursley made 170 all out.
Chris Vaughan led the way with 88 as Bashley (Rydal) moved to within five points of Basingstoke by overhauling Gosport Borough’s 218-8 (Lee Harrop 58) at Privett Park.
Ross Grierson followed up his earlier 3-34 return with an unbeaten 28 which got Bashley home.
