Old Tauntonians & Romsey have taken a firm grip in Southern Premier Division 2 after a fifth successive win saw Waterlooville skittled for 107 and comfortably beaten by six wickets in front of a dejected Rowlands Avenue crowd.
Second placed Ville began brightly enough through Archie Reynolds (34) and Alex Shephard, but all too quickly 52-1 became 65-5 when the captain was run out. Spinners Joe Vaughan (who caught and bowled both his victims) and Matt Bampton did the damage. Harry Tulk weighed in with 3-12 as the Ville sank to 107 all out.
Such a small target was never going to prove too challenging for the leaders, and opener Jovan Dhariwal (45), left,- on his return from Cambridge University, where he has already won a Blue - ensured a solid start to OTs’ reply. But they took their time, eventually wrapping up victory on 108-4 in the 35th over.
Skipper Charlie Gwynn produced a stunning spell to wrap up second placed Fair Oak’s 121-run win at Bemerton, where South Wilts II sank to a league low 48 all out.
Fresh from his second year studies at Exeter, Jimmy Hawkins (4-23) reduced SW to 19-5 before Gwynn brought himself on to take four wicket for one run. Fair Oak’s 169-7 was underpinned by Will Hughes (55) and Tom Hockenhull (44).
Hartley Wintney snatched a dramatic six-wicket win over Bashley (Rydal) seconds with only two balls of their thriller to spare.
Chasing Bashley’s 213-7, Hartley got away to a flying start through Will Ross (49) and Jon Kerr (48), who struck nine fours and six sixes between them before departing in quick succession to leave the score 109-2.
But skipper James Mulvey (65) was up for the challenge, hitting five sixes in handy partnerships with Tom Hudson and Jamie Teale, who hit two maximums off Phil Morris to win the match to leave four times beaten skipper Sean Read pondering a call to the Samaritans.
Earlier, Bournemouth University toe repair man Dan Andrews (73) and Ben Francis (61) top scored in Bashley’s 213-7.
George Neave was left stranded on 99 as Liphook & Ripsley posted a winning 227-9 against Fawley. He hit a six and 12 fours, coming in after Liphook had lurched to 73-4. Neave has only one SPL treble to his name, an unbeaten 114 at Rowledge in 2017.
Liphook are going to be far stronger now Suman Ganguly his back from India. He marked his return with 4-20 and shared eight wickets with ex-Rowledge ace Joe Randall (4-28).
