Felix Organ (left) continued his fine Hampshire 2nd XI form – he made a century in last week’s Second XI Championship win over Middlesex – with an unbeaten 93 which steered defending champions St Cross Symondians to an eight-wicket win over the county’s Academy side at the Green Jackets.
St Cross, Premier Division title winners for the first time in 2008, chased down the Academy’s 169 to win with 21 overs to spare.
South African pace bowler Marvin Williams (2-40) nipped out Academy openers Tom Prest and George Pardoe before Matt Haworth (4-30) struck twice more to leave the county youngsters 83-5, Fletcha Middleton (33) having proved difficult to dislodge.
Miserly spin pair Harry Came (3-19) and Organ (0-14) conceded only 33 runs off their 20 overs bowling in tandem before Mo Abbas (31) and Adjet Dale (31) rallied towards the end of the Academy innings. Howarth’s second spell removed both batsmen.
Tom Foyle went in the opening over of Symondians’ reply but when the Adidas sponsored Organ and Came resumed their partnership, this time with the bat, runs began to flow through positive running between the wickets they spread the field with tactical and clever stroke play.
Organ, who captained the Academy last season, went on to hit a six and eight fours before MCC YC’s prospect Billy Mead made a classy 37 not out and lead St Cross to an eight-wicket win.
