Promotion looks to have become a distant dream for Old Tauntonians & Romsey after a calamitous collapse and defeat by Southern Premier Division 2 cellar dwellers Fawley at Holbury.
Bowled out for 118 and handsomely beaten by seven wickets, OTR are 24 points behind Andover in the push for the probable runners-up place with three games to play.
In essence, OTs will have to win their last three matches against Waterlooville, Hook & Newnham Basics II and Fair Oak, and hope Andover (with a very favourable run-in) slip up.
OTs lost skipper Charlie King and Hakim Peruzi for ducks (there were three more to follow) before Joe Vaughan (34) and Harry Tulk (41) righted the ship.
But having reached 73-2, OTs promptly lost seven wickets for 15 runs, with only Liam Poolman (26) making about figures as Sufian Munir (left)(4-24), Trish Francis and Wayne Smith slicing through the lower order.
Matt Bampton promptly trapped Kieran Earl leg before, but then Munir launched a blistering boundary attack, hitting a six and seven fours in a no nonsense 37 (34 in boundaries – after all, it was too hot to run !).
His innings set things up nicely for Raminder Singh to hit a quick fire 55 not out and end proceedings.
The win brought Fawley (127) to within 26 points of Bashley (Rydal) and Hook & Newnham Basics’ second teams – so beating Hook at Holbury on Saturday is absolutely critical.
Hook did themselves a favour with a 51-run win over St Cross Symondians – left-hander Harry Robson hitting a welcome 75 and county U15 prospect Alex Corbett making 60 in a 130-run stand which saw Basics reach 247-7. St Cross were dismissed for 196 (Brad Aldridge 47).
