OTs and Romsey maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a seven-wicket win against Paultons, who in contrast to their high flying rivals face a fight for survival in Southern Premier Division 2.
Paultons won the toss at Whitemoor Lane and made a good start reaching 40-0 through skipper Simon Ennew (20) and Lee Wateridge (9), but the pair were both dismissed within one run of each other.
Wateridge was run out then Ennew quickly followed caught by Matt Bampton off the economical Vickram Dawson, who returned 1-17 off his seven overs.
Cam Grierson played a couple off sumptuous drives but perished to a superb one handed diving caught and bowled by the left-armer Bampton (3-17).
Dorset prospect Ben Rogers (30) top scored as wickets fell regularly against the OTs spinners with Harry Tulk 3-3 mopping up the tail to leave Paultons 110 all out.
Bothwell Chapungu showed his intent with three boundaries, but fell in the fourth over, for 15, superbly caught at mid wicket by Rogers off the bowling of Harman Chandhoke. Harry Tulk soon fell caught behind by skipper Ennew off Chandhoke (2-34) but a match winning partnership of 72 between Charlie King (37*) and Joe Vaughan (34) edged OTs to within reach of their target. Vaughan fell leg before to James Holgate with six needed for victory which OTs eventually reached with 10 overs to spare and with seven wickets in hand.
Charlie Gwynn and Gregor McKenzie’s showing with the bat, and Rufus Bullough’s with the ball, saw Fair Oak to a fifth win in six completed SPL2 matches at Fawley’s Langdale ground.
The early part of the match belonged to McKenzie. He hit three sixes and four fours in a typically positive innings of 58, and by the time he was third out, at 97 for 3, skipper and fellow left-hander Gwynn was getting established at the other end. Gwynn dominated the second part of the Oaks innings, making 95 in 98 balls and propelling his side to 211 for 7 from their 40 overs. He hit two sixes and ten fours having arrived at the crease with the visitors 19-2.
Sean Williams, whose 3-54 included 17 in wides, and Wayne Smith (3-45) were Fawley’s most effective bowlers.
After the break Ben Smith (2-25) and Ross Stewart (3-18) made the early breakthroughs as Kieran Earl’s patient 14 took Fawley to 50-4. The return to form of leg-spinner Bullough then brought the proceedings to an abrupt halt with 4 wickets for just 6 runs in a devastating four-over spell. Fawley were all out for 67 at the end of the 22nd over, giving Oaks victory by 144 runs.
