Old Tauntonians & Romsey conceded a staggering 52 extras – 44 of them in wides – effectively gifting Southern Premier League Division 2/3 West Cup visitors Bashley (Rydal) II a 20-run victory.
Their wayward bowling contributed almost a quarter of Bashley’s 215-8 – chief culprit Jacob Folkestone being taken off after two overs, having conceded 29 runs, including 11 wides and a no-ball.
Bashley weren’t doing that well at 63-4, but were revived by Simon Watkins who, playing his first SL match since July 2018, hit three sixes and nine fours in a fine 71.
Umpiring duo Denis Emery (pictured) and Keith Williams almost needed a rub down at tea-time after signalling so many wides. Bashley then kept the elderly pair active, bowling 18 of their own !
OTs appeared in a strong position at 127-2 when Rhys Wathen (52) fell to promising 14-year old spinner Ethan Baker.
At 152-5, OTs position weakened – Ben Fletcher (4-48) making inroads - but Jovan Dhariwal (68) remained a threat. His dismissal and that of Charlie King (22) soon after ended their hopes, OTs closing at 195-7.
