Jack Davies is now averaging a Bradmanesque 463 in 2022 after another superb innings maintained Portsmouth & Southsea’s winning start to the Southern Premier League season.
The batsman compiled an unbeaten 91 as P & S defeated Sway by one wicket to record their third successive league win at St James’ Park. They are second in the embryonic Division 3 table, just one point behind Paultons, who beat Langley Manor by nine runs.
Davies has not been dismissed in his last five innings, which have seen him score two hundreds and three other 50-plus scores, writes Simon Carter of The News, Portsmouth.
After hitting 36 in a friendly against Pagham in his first knock of the year, Davies has struck 112* (v Purbrook, friendly), 101* (v Locks Heath, midweek league), 50* (v Havant II, SPL3), 73* (v Trojans, SPL3) and now 91 not out.
Asked to chase 198 for victory, P & S were 23-2 when Davies arrived in the middle. Before another run had been scored, Chris Bollom was dismissed. Alex Davidson (39) helped Davies overcome that dismal start, the pair putting on 103 for the fourth wicket.
Among the last six in the P & S order, only Tom Benfield (13) managed double figures.
But Davies couldn’t be budged at one end, hitting seven fours and three sixes to raise his seasonal average to eye-popping levels with the 29th league half-century of his P & S career.
The winning run came when he hit the second ball of the 45th over to the boundary off the 112th delivery he had faced.
Winless
Earlier, spinner Max Goddard (3-34) and Keiron Dunstan (3-40) had pegged Sway - who had also won their opening two fixtures - back to 197-8 after they had reached 109-2, skipper Tim Noble top scoring with 56.
New signings Jubin Karippai and West Indian Tyrel Chicot shared seven wickets as Gosport Borough claimed their first win of the Southern Premier League season. Winless Basingstoke & North Hants II were dismissed for 129 at Privett Park.
Chicot (3-40) dismissed the visitors’ top three while Karippai - who played in the Hampshire League for Portsmouth-based Kerala last year - bagged 4-20 off 10 overs at second change.
With Hampshire Seniors prospect Mathew Thankachan taking 4-18, Gosport didn’t have it all their way when they replied, losing six wickets in all.
They were given a good start with opener Denzel James - like Chicot, an Antguan - top scoring with a 51-ball 44. Viv Richards (not Sir Viv !) was next highest with 27 as Gosport clinched victory off the last ball of the 38th over.
Portsmouth Grammar School’s Ben Feeney top scored as Havant 2nds claimed their first success since returning to the SPL.
The wicket-keeper - who has played for Hampshire under-16s this year - struck a league best 70 as Havant posted 207-6 against Trojans at Stoneham Lane.
Victims
Feeney held the innings together after Havant had dipped to 23-3, receiving good support from Harrison Barnard (32 not out), Oliver Jones (31) and Ben Turk (27).
With opener Syed Agha (49) top scoring, the hosts progressed to 78-1 in reply. But Agha’s removal - one of three victims for teen Matty Hayward (3-32) - started a collapse which left Trojans 122-6.
Evergreen wicket-keeper Nigel Le Bas hit an unbeaten 42 but the six batters after him in the order only managed 23 between them. And when left-arm spinner Steven Matthews (2-31) dismissed last man Tim Felstead, Trojans were all out for 185 (extras 35, including 25 wides) to leave Havant 22-run winners.
Purbrook suffered a third successive defeat, failing to capitalise on a great start against South Wilts II.
Jahanzeb Habib (3-33) helped reduce Wilts to 65-5 after they had been inserted by Purbrook skipper Sean Figgins.
Captain Robert Pittman (51) and Tom Bolam (26) added 66 for the sixth wicket as Wilts eventually reached 176 (extras 33, including 26 wides).
That was too high a chase for Purbrook, who fell 28 runs short. Figgins top scored with 35 - he was dismissed by young spinner William Langdown (3-11 off seven overs) - with Aaron Dean (30) the next best.
