Bashley (Rydal) skipper Michael Porter believes his side “made a statement” with their six-wicket win over Burridge – but acknowledges they “need another big effort” when ECB British Gas Southern League champions Havant visit the BCG this Saturday.
“Burridge were runners-up last season and we’ve scored a convincing over them, so that’s a great start, the one we wanted,” he said.
“We played to our strengths, fielded well and then chased down the target with Patrick Page (left) looking real quality at the top of the order.
“But if we are going to push on, Havant is a must win – and there’s no reason why we can’t.”
Page, the 19-year old South Australian left-hander, hit an unbeaten 74 and ensured there would be no slip ups when Bashley wobbled at 81-4 chasing a modest Burridge target of 155.
Bashley took the game to Burridge from the second (white) ball of the day when Mitch Wilson trapped former Hampshire opener Derek Kenway leg before.
Jamie Richards (24), Joe Collings-Wells (25) and Lee Savident (32) all made starts.
But Wilson (3-32), celebrating a return to cricket after a three-year lay off due to on-going back problems, and debutant Harry Walton (3-46) made frequent inroads.
Burridge lost their last five wickets for 33 runs, with Sam Thomson (2-32) triggering the collapse by removing Savident, one of four slip catches Porter pouched.
Solent University left-hander Brighton Mugochi at least gave Burridge something to bowl at with a late 25 not out.
Burridge removed both Bashley openers for 25 and when Porter and Tom Jacques fell after tea, Burridge sniffed an outside chance with the visitors 81-4.
But Page remained cool, hit 11 clinical fours and, with Chris Ridley (17) alongside, steered Bashley across the line.
Burridge new ball bowler Nick McMurray went lame with a leg injury and may miss Saturday’s trip to New Milton.
