Parley’s prospects of attaining Southern Premier League status next season – should they finish in one of the County Division 1 promotion places – have received a significant off-field boost.
They finished runners-up in their debut County Division 1 season last summer, but were denied promotion to the SPL due to accreditation issues.
The club reports that the local West Parley Parish Council has recently taken back the ownership of the premises and sports field off Christchurch Road following the expiry of the lease.
The Parish Council’s intention is to develop the clubhouse and grounds and re-open previous facilities. Leaseholder Parley Sports Club and the adult Football Club members voted at an EGM to relocate to Chapel Gate for upcoming 2019/20 soccer season.
“That means the future of cricket at West Parley is secure and the outfield will benefit from the winter absence of adult football matches.,” said Parley cricket manager Keith Clarke.
Equally Parley Cricket Club, who have called the ground ‘home’ for over 60 years will look forward to the proposed developments.
Security of tenure is assured and the whole club, from its five adult sides, the Ladies and Girls to the dozen or so Youth sides can plan ahead.
A sponsorship package for 2020 has been agreed and full details are scheduled to be revealed in a matter of days.
With four matches remaining, Parley current sit second to Hook & Newnham Basics II in County Division 1 and, if a top two status is maintained come August 31, they hope accreditation can be achieved and they can make their Premier League bow next season.
Batsmen are certainly enjoying their visits to West Parley, where in just seven CD1 game, a combined total of 3,100 runs have been scored by home and visiting teams.
A self-supporting Ladies and Girls section has been reformed this summer.
Parley, hugely successful in youth cricket for the past two decades or more, are through to next Thursday’s Under-17s Kerry Cup finals at May‘s Bounty, Basingstoke.
