Harrison Clarke announced his arrival on the Totton & Eling stage by plundering a boundary strewn century on debut which set up a 24-run Southern Premier League Premier/Division 1 Cup win over New Milton.
The tall Parley raised opener cracked three sixes and 13 fours in his 126 scored off 109 balls, which pointed Totton to 248-7. New Milton replied with a creditable 224-8.
Totton, last season’s Southern Premier Division 2 winners, are enjoying rich pickings from Dorset youth development, with Oli Thomas, Owen Morris and Jack Owens all headed up the busy A31 each week to play at Southern Gardens.
Clarke (left), who is studying at Bournemouth University, hasn’t played much cricket in the past few seasons, but there was little sign of rustiness as the commanded the middle.
He and Thomas (27) provided a 77-run start before the Bryanston schooled wicketkeeper was stumped by Luke Mortimore off Ryan Beck. Joe Hall then bowled Morris to leave the hosts 108-2 and a little behind the desired run rate.
But Brighton Mugochi (41) and Clarke put Totton back on top before George Watts (4-42) began to create inroads, eventually having the dominant Parley recruit caught after a superb maiden knock.
New Milton got off to a blistering but short lived start with Toby Edwards (16) smashing four consecutive in Dan Collier’s opening over, but was then removed the next over by Hakim Peruzi for 16.
Campbell Golding arrived at the crease and continued the Green & Gold’s fast pace. He was the stalwart in the visitors’ innings as he smashed 12 fours and a six in his 68, but he was caught by Collier off Christchurch reared Jack Owens in the 25th over.
With Golding departing, New Milton were well ahead of the run rate but lacked wickets to go with it.
Watts carried his excellent form with the ball over to the bat as he scored a handy 45 not out off 36 balls. He was assisted by Hall (29), but New Milton were unable to keep up with the rising run rate and eventually fell short 24 runs of their target.
