Paultons took advantage of St Cross Symondians’ surprise defeat at Waterlooville to move to within five points of the Winchester club in the chase for the potential runners-up place beyond Totton & Eling in Southern Premier League Division 2.
While they were thrashing Fair Oak by 152 runs, St Cross tumbled to a rather unexpected 40-run loss at Rowlands Avenue.
Cameron Grierson’s (left) season best 95 underpinned Paultons’ hefty 274-6 against Fair Oak, who are generally struggling to score runs this season.
The former Lymington opener hit a six and 11 fours, sharing a near century stand with Australian George Condon (53) before Nigel Feltham smacked a no nonsense 46, including four sixes. Only Charlie Gwynn (34) made his mark in Oak’s disappointing 122 response, Scott Dawes taking 4-26.
A top order batting collapse, which saw five wickets fall for 31 runs, cost St Cross Symondians II dear as they endeavoured to chase down the Ville’s 187-9 (Dan Birch 50).
Dan Young (35) lost five partners in quick succession before St Cross slithered to 147 all out against Conor Regan (4-29), Archie Reynolds (3-23) and Max Goddard (3-23).
