Bashley-Rydal batsman Michael Porter found himself marooned helplessly at the non-striker’s end and out of partners after taking his adopted Melbourne club, Brunswick, to within touching distance of victory over Coburg in the Victoria Sub-District competition.
Brunswick lost by one run chasing Coburg’s 190 after an odd batting order pick left Porter coming at nine with his side wobbling at 99-7. They were eventually 189 all out.
He explained: “We had nine overs to bat at the end of the first day’s play, but 25-3 overnight.
“Our skipper Karl Mayne (61) and myself added 89 to take us to 183-8 when he was trapped leg before, leaving us eight runs to win with two wickets left.
“I was going nicely on 68 (one six and eight fours), but then our number ten decided to run himself out before the 11 chipped a long-hop back to the bowler. 189 all out.
“It left me stranded. I don’t think I’ve ever been more frustrated ! “
The one-run defeat compounded a difficult winter season Down Under for Porter, who made only his second fifty-plus score against Coburg. His season hardly got off on the right footing with his first five matches in the Victoria Sub-District being washed out. He didn’t get going until November 5.
Lymington’s Dan Cox was the star of Middle Park’s 30-run victory over Bentleigh in Melbourne’s Southern Bayside League Division 2, hitting 66 and later taking two wickets. The island-based spin all-rounder now has 259 runs and 25 wickets to his name.
Hugo Hammond, who will skipper Hartley Wintney’s SPL2 side this summer, has found runs hard to come by in the Bayside competition, with 197 in 15 knocks for Mordialloc, adding 15 dismissals to his CV.
Hampshire’s Toby Albert chased leather on day one of Joondalup’s WACA Premiership match as Fremantle piled up a massive 467-4, with WA’s Sam Whiteman scoring 250 not out and Somerset’s George Bartlett 112.
At least the Newbury based youngster had some consolation, top scoring with 61, including a six and ten fours as his side made 225 in reply.
Across in Adelaide, St Cross Symondians prospect George O’Connor continues to underline the progress he’s made at the Darren Lehmann Academy by dismissing big hitting South Australia left-hander Mark Cosgrave for 13 playing for Southern Districts against Northern Districts in the West End SACA Premier Division. O’Connor returned a tidy 2-48 off 18 overs, six of which were maidens.
