Spin duo Rob Pittman and Kit Blomfield spun South Wilts seconds to a surprise 31-run win over high fliers Langley Manor and into fourth spot in Southern Premier Division 3.
Pittman took a season’s best 5-18 and 16-year old Blomfield 3-27 as Langley Manor were whisked out for 95 in reply to South Wilts’ 126 all out.
Two early strikes by Henry Smith (2-20) put the Manor – second in the table behind Portsmouth & Southsea – on the back foot and only Jack Purnell (35) made his mark as Pittman and Blomfield cut through their batting.
Pittman now has 25 wickets, one more than P & S skipper Ben Saunders.
South Wilts were in the mire themselves at 42-5 against Simon Peters (4-24) and Elliott Pointing (3-21) when Sam Pittman (35) and captain Rob (24) came to the rescue with a sixth wicket stand which
doubled the score. South Wilts’ 126 proved enough.
Trojans returned to winning ways with a 35 run win against bottom of the table Purbrook, and obtained their first maximum point haul of the season, but they made heavy weather of it in a match in which drooped catches and poor fielding was a feature, writes Malcolm Clarke.
Purbrook won the toss and elected to field. After Craig Harrington was second out for 16, Syed Agha (70) and Nigel Le Bas (22) took the score to 138, but both batsmen were amongst four wickets to fall for 11 runs. However Syed Mahmood (56) and Jamie Donaldson (51 not out) added 107 for the 7th wicket and ensured that Trojans finished on 267 for 7. Brad Mengham who took 3 for 14 off his 10 overs was the only Purbrook bowler to take more than one wicket.
When Purbrook batted they lost 4 wickets for 70 with none of their dismissed batsmen reaching double figures. However although their partnership benefitted from dropped catches on three successive balls Jahanzeb Habib whose 82 included six 6's and Ijaz Trakhail (32) added 59 in 9 overs. After both were out in successive overs Aaron Dean (45), James Gurney (29) and Sameen Mahoob (16) gave them a glimmer of hope with the first two named adding 66 for the 7th wicket. However when Craig Harrington took wickets with successive balls the match was effectively over. Syed Mahmood took 3 wickets for Trojans, Tim Felstead and Harrington two apiece and Anish Joshi and Jamie Donaldson one,
