Basingstoke & North Hants
Back (from left): Joe Oates, Daniel Belcher, Martyn James, Dean Nurse, William Phillips, David Griffiths, Ted Pearson (scorer). Seated: Scott Dyer, Ryan Connor, Mitchell Stokes (captain), Mathew Thankachan, George Metzger.
Former Hampshire & Kent paceman David Griffiths and Martyn James combined to skittle Sarisbury Athletic for 64 in less than 30 overs at Allotment Road, where Basingstoke & North Hants romped to an eight-wicket win.
Griffiths took 4-18 after James had wiped out Sarisbury’s top order with a 4-13 return.
“It was movement in the air, as opposed to off the pitch, that did for the majority of their batsmen and we held on to some good catches,” said Basingstoke skipper Mitchell Stokes, who made 29 of the runs the Bountymen needed.
“Our young wicketkeeper George Metzger took three catches and Ryan Connor clung on to two in the slips.”
Calmore Sports pulled off a notable 20-run success against Liphook & Ripsley, who had won their two previous Premier Division 1 games.
Once again, Melbournian import Jack Rutter inspired Calmore, scoring an important half century and later taking three Liphook wickets. Rutter got his 51 not out after Ben Perry (36) and left-hander Ben Johns (36) had produced a tidy partnership. But Calmore will have been disappointed to have seen a promising 131-3 become 182-8. Nonetheless, it proved enough as two early strikes by left-armer Steve Wright (2-26) left Liphook playing catch up at 43-4.
Suman Ganguly struck 60 and added useful runs with Grant Rouse (35) before Rutter (3-39) removed them both and Liphook slid to 162 all out.
South African Schaughn van Greunen, who smashed the Sarisbury Athletic attack for an unbeaten 123 on Ventnor debut, went on the hitting trail again – with Rowledge on the receiving end at Newclose !
He blazed two sixes and eight fours in a breezy 82 as Ventnor chased down Rowledge’s 245-4 to win by two wickets with three balls to spare.
“He’s seriously good,” reflected Rowledge’s respected all-rounder David Lloyd.
“As good an overseas player as I’ve been in the Premier League.”
Lloyd himself made 39 after a century opening stand between Nick Morant (63) and Tom Gleave (55). Australian Tom Treble got 37.
Ironically, 14-year old Zeph Wells, who took 8-37 at Sarisbury a week earlier, went wicketless.
But Rowledge had the game – and a potential first win – taken away from them by van Greunen, while Neil Westhorpe’s unbeaten 56 did much to secure back-to-back wins for the islanders.
* Tichborne Park’s scheduled home match with Portsmouth was washed out.
