Mark Lavelle produced the best-ever bowling performance in British Gas Southern League Division 1 cricket to steer Calmore Sports to a 24-run victory at Tichborne Park.
He took 8-17 in 9.3 overs as Tichborne were dismissed for 198, in their bid to chase down Calmore’s 222-8.
Lavelle introduced himself to the Calmore attack after Tichborne openers George Ayling (33) and Ben Allen (19) put on 44 in quick time.
“They got off to an absolute flier, so we did a good job dragging them back and took wickets at big times during their innings,” the Calmore captain explained.
Discussing his bowling performance overall, Lavelle said: “I didn’t get a great deal of assistance from the pitch, only one ball really turned during my whole spell.
I just tried to attack the stumps and mix my pace up. It was just one of those days where everything clicked for me.”
James Manning broke through and removed the dangerous Ayling before Lavelle took three wickets for the addition of only seven runs to leave Tichborne 69-4.
Tom Allam struck 57 and added key runs with Jack Skinner (40), but Lavelle continued to make inroads and claimed the scalps of both Tichborne top scorers before the innings ended at 198.
“It’s fantastic news that I’ve broken a record like this, but the main things is that we’ve won a fourth game in five and share top spot with Bournemouth,” he beamed.
Lavelle hasn’t been able to match his bowling form with the bat, but watched from the pavilion as Michael Cook (59) and Ben Johns (41) built a stand from which Calmore build a competitive total.
Paul Proudley clouted 33 and James Rose 21 as Calmore reached 222-8.
“It was a great effort from us with the bat, although we should have pushed towards 250,” Lavelle said.
