St Cross Symondians’ seconds overcame a massive hat-trick orchestrated batting collapse to nick a two-wicket win off much fancied British Gas Southern Premier Division 2 hosts Hartley Wintney.
Chasing Hartley’s 226 all out, St Cross appeared to be cruising towards a comfortable win on the back of a century partnership between Paul Hawkins (73) and Dan Young (49).
But a hat-trick by New Zealander Henry Collier (5-24) prompted St Cross to lose an astonishing seven wickets for 22 runs.
Now reeling at 148-8, St Cross seemed now to be headed for defeat – until Harry Foyle (41) was joined by skipper Steve Mitchell (44).
The ninth-wicket pair turned the match on its head with an unbroken 69-run stand which carried St Cross II to the most unlikeliest of victories.
Earlier Collier, who played for 2015 Middlesex Premier League champions Hampstead last summer, top scored for HW with 62 before becoming one of Tom Velland’s three victims. Velland took 3-33 and Mitchell 4-45.
