Hampshire all-rounder Chris Wood made a ‘batting-only’ comeback, helping Old Tauntonians & Romsey to a six-wicket win at Southern Premier Division 2 rivals Hambledon.
Side-lined for the past month with an intercostals muscle injury, Wood hit four boundaries in his 27 as OTs & Romsey went on to overhaul Hambledon’s 170 (George Marshall 34).
Instead, teenager leg-spinner Joe Vaughan took the bowling credits with 3-23, while Steve Smith, Jodey Brown and Rob Newman took two each.
An 80-run stand between second-wicket pair Ian Woodhall (47) and Charlie King (46 not out) pointed OTs to victory.
South Wilts II have slipped into the second from bottom relegation place in Division 2 after previously winless Trojans beat them by four wickets at Stoneham Lane.
Put into bat in overcast conditions, South Wilts were 23-2 before teenage opener Henry Smith (57) was joined by Tom Pearce for a 107-run partnership.
Pearce received equally good support from Steve Kidd (33) and the pair began to accelerate the scoring rate in a partnership of 47 for the 5th wicket until the former captain was finally out for 67 which included the only two sixes of the innings. SW closed at 194-8.
Nigel le Bas (18) and Syed Mahmood (12) provided Boyd with useful support, but when both were out and a further wicket fell in the 45th over Trojans still required 24 with only four wickets left. Boyd’s eventual 84 not out proved a match winner.
