A three-wicket new-ball spell by Australian all-rounder James Bills paved the way to Paultons’ creditable 19-run win over fancied British Gas Southern Premier Division 2 hosts Hartley Wintney.
The Sydney-based overseas ace removed Hartley’s prolific Henry Collier and fellow opener Will Kerr in quick succession – both were caught behind by Paultons’ top scorer Simon Ennew – and then removed Danny Flanders.
At 18-3, Hartley Wintney were some way short of challenging Paultons’ 194 all out.
Last year’s Premier 2 batting award winner Danny Plume (84) and Scott Baldwin (37) added 109 for the fourth wicket, but when Peter Lamb (4-26) removed both batsmen, the North Hampshire side were headed for defeat.
Hartley lost their last seven wickets for 48 runs.
Earlier, Ennew (60) and Nathan Feltham (33) eased Paultons’ to 104-2, but teenager Oli Waddington (3-37) ensured they did not post an unmanageable score.
Totton & Eling now boast the only unbeaten SPL2 record after a Dan Clouting inspired four-wicket win over previously undefeated St Cross Symondians II.
Seventeen wickets fell for 263 runs on a difficult Southern Gardens surface, where the visitors struggled to 130-8, with former Hampshire batsman Jason Laney (28) top scoring.
Oli Perrin took 3-27 for Totton, whose success was almost entirely due to opener Dan Clouting, who guided his side through a Harry Foyle initiated top order collapse.
While the former Sarisbury Athletic player held form, wickets tumbled all around with Harry Foyle (3-32) removing three batsmen in quick succession.
Clouting, whose match winning innings contained a six and 11 fours, eventually found a reliable partner in Wayne Lockey (24), with whom he added 54 invaluable runs and set up the win.
Newly promoted Langley Manor remain rooted to the SPL2 basement after being dismissed for 86 and beaten by 97 runs by visiting Sparsholt.
Middle-order pair Stu Tognarelli (41) and Tom Foster (40) led Sparsholt to 183-9 (Jeremy Frith 31), young left-arm spinner Tom Spencer taking 5-35.
The Manor were blown away by some superior Sparsholt bowling, Dave Banks (4-21) and Mike Howarth (2-23) tearing their top order to shreds.
Five of Langley’s top six batsmen managed only ten runs between them.
Graham Noble (22) tried to stop the rot, but spinner Nick Doubell’s 3-26 return finished the innings at 86 all out.
