Itchen College soccer hero Ethan Taylor underlined his sporting prowess with a maiden Southern Premier League half-century which helped set up Totton & Eling’s first Division Two win of the season.
The 17-year old, who two goals set up Itchen’s recent 2-1 AOC English Colleges Cup final success against Carmel (Merseyside) at Walsall, hit 63 and shared a 138-run stand with Zimbabwean Gary Chirmuuta.
It laid the foundations of Totton’s 46-run win over table topping Basingstoke & North Hants seconds at May’s Bounty, ending a four-match losing start to the season.
Benefitting from a steady start by Sam Bracey (35) and James Taylor (43), Totton batted themselves into a potentially winning position on the strength of that century third wicket partnership.
Taylor junior hit nine boundaries, while Chirmuuta struck a long ball, with two maximums and eight fours in his 74.
Basingstoke sank to 56-4, improved through Chris Froud (27) and Matt Deadman (29), and were eventually dismissed for 195, with Chris Jolley (36) top scoring. Billy Lightfoot took 3-21.
The win lifted Totton above Trojans, who remain bottom despite a handsome 108-run win over Tichborne Park.
Ed Boyd (61) and Syed Mahmood (51) put Trojans in a commanding position before Dan Babage (74), with three sixes in the last over, sent the total soaring to 278-3.
Jamie Donaldson’s five-wicket new ball spell wrecked Tichborne’s top order.
He finished with 5-32 before Tichborne, minus the Allam brothers (at separate weddings), finished with 170, Jake Bristow (41) top scoring.
