Prominent past Gosport sportsman and politician Peter Edgar has been awarded the OBE in the New Year’s Honours List for services to education and to the community in the Borough.
A meticulously correct batsman, he opened for Gosport Amateurs and later Gosport Borough in the heydays of the Deanery, Old Tauntonians and Trojans. A talented sportsman, he played Hampshire League soccer for Fareham Town and Gosport Borough, and after he had hung up his boots became joint manager of the Borough.
A long standing member of Gosport Borough Council - he was the town's Mayor in 1997/98 - and past executive member for education on Hampshire County Council, he still maintains an active interest in Gosport cricket, often attending home matches at Privett Park, besides away games. His recognition with an OBE is considered by many to be long overdue.
