Hampshire Under-17s escaped from Taunton with a draw after rain washed out a large chunk of the third day’s play of their ECB County Championship match against Somerset.
They had been largely outplayed by the West Country side and were 34-1 chasing an improbable last day target of 355 for victory when the rains came.
Rory Hipwell, with 3-31, was the pick of the bowlers as Somerset totalled 222 in their first knock, but only Cole Campbell (56) shone with the bat as Hampshire were dismissed for 139 in reply.
Somerset smashed 271-6 in their second innings and, with an 83-run lead, set Hampshire a mammoth 355 to win. They were 34-1 when the game was abandoned.
Hampshire’s third ECB U17 County Championship match is against Worcestershire at May’s Bounty, Basingstoke, starting on Monday, 11am.
