Cricket scorers are much undervalued and often taken for granted. Will their scoring positions be ‘safe’ if and when recreational cricket resumes ? This is a view from Cathy Rawson, which appears in Notcher’s News, the scorer's network.
Is your scoring position safe?
Many scorers will have enjoyed the luxury of a comfortable scorebox where some, if not all, of our needs were met. I suspect that most of us have also scored matches where the facilities were less than adequate or indeed there were no facilities at all.
The Covid19 pandemic lockdown continues but we are hearing that there is the possibility that cricket will be played again soon …… but are we prepared?
The lockdown rules are being eased and, at the higher levels of cricket, safety measures are being put in place but will this happen at grassroots level?
Points to consider
1 - Can you stop players and visitors from leaning in through the scorebox window or popping their head around the door for a quick (or not so quick) chat?
2 - Are you in an ‘at risk’ group?
3 - Is your scoring position at a safe distance from that of your colleague?
4 - Will you be in an enclosed space where the virus may be able to breach the recommended safe distance?
5 - Will scoring positions and any relevant equipment be sanitised before each use?
6 - Some leagues have indicated that they may operate with just the ‘home’ scorer if matches resume. How confident are you in recognising members of the ‘away’ team?
7 - Will you be expected to be the custodian of the players’ valuables (wallets, mobile phones etc) etc?
8 - Have you confirmed that any insurance policy offered by your governing body and/or club will be effective during this crisis?
9 - Can you access toilets should the need arise? Pavilions/club houses will remain closed for the foreseeable future.
10 - Are you able to travel to matches? Not all scorers have their own transport.
There’s more to think about than just making sure that you’ve got everything you need in your scoring bag this season. Do your own risk assessment. Stay safe and hope to renew acquaintances with your many scorer colleagues sometime soon.
