** An all too familiar scene across the region this weekend as the rain falls, the covers are on – and there’s little cricket ! This is the scene, pictured by Roy Hollobone, at South Wilts, who were due to host St Cross Symondians.
Round three of the Southern Premier League programme was decimated by the wet weather, with 14 of the scheduled 20 matches across the four divisions being called off without a single ball bowled. Play was only possible at six separate venues.
The inclement weather hit Lymington in the pocket.
They travelled to Newclose on the Isle of Wight, where play initially seemed a possibility in their scheduled ECB Premier Division match with Ventnor.
But, soon after arriving at Newclose – the trip cost them over £250 in car and ferry fares – the rains came down and the game was called off.
The only Premier Division start was on the Ageas Bowl Nursery Ground, where a slightly stronger than normal Academy side had Alton 51-2 when the rains came.
Australian Dan Hutton was 32*, with Bashley (Rydal) teen George Pardoe (2-9) taking both the wickets.
The two Division 1 game in the north of the county began, with Basingstoke & North Hants 89-3 against Andover at Mays Bounty, where the Bountymen were 89-3 on the strength of Ben Julon (34) and Max Harsham’s 30 not out. Their 38-overs was rhe longest anyone played.
Several miles down the road, in-form Inderpal Nandra (54*) and Jack Marston (50) notched half-centuries for Portsmouth, who made 135-3 by the 25th over. Spinner Rhodes Franklin took 2-5.
Rowledge, put into bat, were 91-4 (David Lloyd 30) at Liphook & Ripsley, for whom teenager George Neave took 2-32.
Hartley Wintney were handily placed at 98-1 (Tommy Garwood 33) at Hambledon when rain closed in across Broadhalfpenny Down.
In SPL3, Havant II made a start against Gosport Borough, with Peter Hopson 44 not out as the hosts made it to 81-2 before the rain.
It is unlikely much play was possible in the Hampshire League.
