Rowledge gallantly fell at the final hurdle in their dream to become Surrey Vitality Under-19 t20 county champions.
Being beaten in the final ultimately proved a bridge too far for Rowledge, who knocked out Sutton in the semi-final before suffering a seven-wicket defeat by the tournament favourites, Esher.
Being beaten in a cup final is often a bitter pill to swallow, but Rowledge can take immense pride from their performances in the competition.
“There are some seriously talented young players in this squad. To have beaten the likes of the Guildford, Normandy and Valley End – all top Surrey Championship clubs – at the group stage was creditable in itself and then to knock out Sutton in the semi’s was even better,” praised Rowledge first team captain Ben Wish.
“Esher were a good all-round side, but our lads can look back on their performances with a great deal of pride.”
The 68-run opening partnership between Jonty Seeborn (46) and Zac Lereux (25) set up a competitive 122-5 (Max Martin 25) against Sutton, who never recovered from losing two quick wickets and slumped to 58-7 before being bowled out for 95.
Martin (3-19), Will Ryman (2-14) and left-arm spinner Ollie Baker (2-22) took the credits for Rowledge, whose out-fielding really caught the eye.
Rowledge took that positivity into the final against Esher and with Seeborn (22) again at the helm they began well. The in-form opener departed at 33-2 but after reaching 67 by the eighth over, Rowledge found it difficult to force the pace against a nagging Esher attack and managed only seven boundary hits in their eventual 105-6.
Esher took just 15 overs to polish off the target and become Surrey Under-19 t20 winners. But Rowledge deserve immense credit for getting to the county final ...
