A 159-run opening partnership between Harry Broderick and Tom Prest swept the Hampshire Academy to the brink of a six-wicket win over Rowledge at Church Road – their second in the Southern Premier League Cup East group.
Broderick hit two sixes (off consecutive deliveries) and ten fours in his 83, while Prest breached the boundary rope on nine occasions in his 66 as the Academy chased down 172 with almost nine overs to spare.
Ironically, Prest would have been trapped leg before wicket in the opening over of the Academy innings had Joe Randall not been called for over-stepping.
The  teenage pair seldom looked in any trouble and played pleasing shots all around the wicket as the Academy homed in on the target.
The county youngsters appeared set for a ten-wicket win when the Wimborne-based Prest was superbly caught by Jontie Sebborn, pictured left above.
Emerging left-arm spinner Ollie Baker (3-34) then had Broderick stumped and quickly removed Huw Wheeler and George Metzger before the formalities were completed.
Earlier, Sebborn’s 81, which included a six and 11 fours, caught the eye for Rowledge. He had been in the Hampshire age group squads until he was 15 and showed that he still has plenty of potential.
Top order partners Jake Wish and Ollie Baker, having made encouraging starts, will have been disappointed with their respective dismissals, while David Lloyd’s enterprising 31 gave the Rowledge innings a late boost.
Ryan Stevenson sent down a tidy 1-20, with South Wilts’ raised left-armer Josh Croom (2-23) working up a lively pace in his second spell and hitting Will Ryman on the helmet in his final over.  Fortunately, the Rowledge teen quickly recovered.
