Poole Town veteran Dave Porter rolled back the years, scoring his first century in amore than a decade as Dorset Seniors went on a 314-run scoring spree against the Channel Islands in the ECB 50-plus County Championships at Dean Park.
Porter hit a six and 14 fours in his 120 and shared a blistering 233-run second wicket partnership with Weymouth’s Jim Ryall (122) as Dorset posted a Championship best 314-2 off 45 overs.
The Channel Islands were whipped out for 145, Ferndown Wayfarers’ David Ballam taking 5-21 and Ryall completing a fine display with a 3-16 return.
Dorset ought to have beaten Hampshire, whom they twice had on the ropes before allowing the visitors to escape from Dean Park with a seven-run victory.
Joe Wilson took 3-17 and Porter 3-19 as Hampshire wriggled clear from 126-6 to make a competitive 225 all out. When John Young (73) and Porter (51) powered Dorset’s reply to 175-2, only one outcome seemed probable, but Hampshire’s bowlers applied the brake and the hosts were marooned seven runs short at 218-7 at stumps.
Dorset finished fifth in the eight-county group, winning four and losing three matches. Ryall made 527 runs, including four centuries and was the leading batsmen in the country at the end of the regional games.
