Hursley Park vet Peter Green faces a lengthy period of recuperation after suffering a potentially serious injury while skippering his Hampshire Over-70s side in West Sussex.
It was initially feared Green, a prominent former Hyde Ramblers batsman/wicketkeeper in his prime, may have broken or fractured his hip bone while fielding in the Hampshire county match against Sussex at Littlehampton, ironically his 200th appearance for the Seniors.
He explained: "I was fielding in the covers and think my studs must have got caught in the turf and my hip rotated. I fell to the ground, but because it was excruciatingly painful I couldn’t be moved until an ambulance came two hours later.
"I was taken to Worthing hospital, where I spent two days. I had an X-ray and was told I had a fracture at the hip joint at the top of the femur, the only solution being a hip replacement, which couldn't be done until the following week because of the consultants’ strike. It was a bit distressing!
"On Saturday, I had a CT scan which, thankfully, revealed no fracture, but probably a severe hip abductor tear. I was able to leave hospital on crutches that afternoon.
"I'm now at home, resting, elevating and icing and waiting to see the physio in a few days time."
The match was abandoned in the 32nd over with Sussex 153-4, the outcome being that Hampshire have maintained their points average and consequently qualified for the national quarter-finals, and an away tie with Cheshire next month.
