Hampshire Seniors’ comfortable 88-run victory over Wiltshire, which put them top of the ECB 50-plus County Championship south-west group table, was marred by a serious leg injury sustained by South African Brenden Fourie.
The retired Border provincial cricketer, who made almost 140 First Class and List A appearances in South Africa, collapsed at the crease while batting during the latter stages of Hampshire’s 217 all out and was taken to hospital with a ruptured Achilles. He made 13 before being carried off.
Hampshire’s total was largely underpinned by Basingstoke & North Hants opener Andy Giles (67), who stayed calm when his side slipped to 122-5 (Andy Parratt 33). Sparsholt’s Andy Worth (27) helped ease the final score to 217.
Having reached 59-2, Wiltshire fell away to 129 all out, opener Dave Ricketts batting through to make 69. Havant’s Pete Hayward took 3-24.
Hampshire’s next match is a potential group decider against Dorset at Calmore Sports’ Loperwood Park on Tuesday, 1pm.
