Former South Africa Under-19 captain Sibz Makhanya wrecked the Hampshire Academy with a 5-11 spell as the county youngsters plunged to a crushing 151-run defeat by Basingstoke & North Hants at May’s Bounty.
The Dolphins all-rounder sent the Academy crashing from 48-2 to 80 all out – taking five of the last eight wickets to fall for only 32 runs.
The defeat was a serious below to the Academy’s prospects of challenging for the Southern Premier League title – their optimism having been fuelled by three successive wins.
But they were well beaten in a match reduced to 45 overs per side after a heavy overnight deluge had flooded May’s Bounty and play was delayed until after lunch.
Basingstoke, whose form has been patchy all summer, dictated the terms from start to finish, with Ben Thane’s 82 at the top of the innings key.
Chris Jolley hit a lively 29 early on, but Thane’s 13-boundary knock ensured that the Bountymen would post a competitive total.
Mitchell Stokes (35) and Brad Neal, with a quick fire 36, took Basingstoke to 231-7.
Martyn James (3-36) struck three blows with the new ball to negate any prospect of the Academy making a positive start.
Tom Scriven (29) top scored, but when he became the first of a nap hand of victims for Makhanya, the Academy batting folded lack the proverbial pack of cards.
