Hampshire Seniors’ bid to reach the last 16 of the Sixties County Championship is set to go to the wire, with Tuesday’s ‘summit’ against group leaders Somerset at Hursley Park (1pm) potentially critical to progress into the national phase of the competition.
A dramatic two-wicket win over Wales in Ebbw Vale lifts Hampshire (145) into second place in the table, one point above Gloucestershire (144), whose final group match is against Wales (131) at Redmarley. Runners-up and a qualifying third place will depend on Tuesday’s scores.
Rowledge all-rounder Chris Yates (left) was the hero of Hampshire’s win in South Wales, achieved with three balls to spare.
Chasing a Welsh score of 210-5 (Leighton O’Connor 111) – they were 15-3 at one point – Hampshire slumped to 114-5 (Neil Trestrail 39). Geoff Beale (39) and Chris Wood (24) contributed, but Hampshire got themselves behind the clock and left it to Yates to smack three sixes and five fours in an unbeaten 58 to get the visitors home.
