Left-arm spinner Matt Bampton celebrated a career-best 6-34 as Old Tauntonians & Romsey leapfrogged over Waterlooville into the second promotion slot in Southern Premier Division 2 after beating their hosts by six wickets at Rowlands Avenue.
OTR’s fifth win on the trot leaves them 16 points adrift of unbeaten leaders Hambledon, the last team to beat them on May 14.
It was only the second time 24-years old Bampton has taken five wickets or more in an SPL match since making his debut in 2016, though he now has 145 scalps dangling from his belt.
He opened the bowling at Rowlands Avenue - skipper Charlie King employed five separate spinners – and achieved immediate success by bowling Ville’s Gab Broadhurst.
Archie Reynolds (58) and Kiwi Josh McGregor (30) progressed Waterlooville’s score into treble figures when, at 122-3, Bampton really began to make his presence felt, talking the next five wickets before Alex Shephard (32) piloted his side to 197-8.
New ball pair Jon Hudson and Josh McCoy each struck as OTs slipped to 22-2 in reply, losing Pete Newman second ball and Hakim Peruzi soon after.
But skipper Charlie King (67 not out) and opener Joe Vaughan (41) put on 76 for the third wicket, before Harry Tulk (38 not out) helped his captain add a further 74 for the fourth.
Rob Newman then took 16 off the 47th over - bowled by Hudson - before victory was secured when Tim Jackson delivered a no ball off the first delivery of the 49th over.
