Talented Fareham sportsman Luke Cornish celebrated a career-best 6-13 bowling return literally hours after receiving news that he had obtained a First Class honours degree in Maths & Finance at Loughborough University.
Cornish, a leading light in the town’s hockey club, took six wickets in 31 balls as Trojans collapsed from 130-4 to 151 all out in a Southern Premier League Division 3 match against Fareham & Crofton, who went on to win by four wickets at Bath Lane.
All the time Syed Agha (37) and Syed Mahmood (36) remained at the Bath Lane crease, Trojans appeared set for a decent score, but when James Headen (2-17) nipped out Mahmood and Oli Kelly in quick succession (at 102-1) they fell apart.
Bowling straight, Cornish (left) was quick to take the Honours, hitting the stumps of four Trojans batsmen and having two others caught behind by Tom Kent as six wickets fell for 21 runs.
Fareham made steady progress towards their third win of the season, James Heiniger (34), Sam Stoddart (26), Cornish (24) and Kent (23) doing the spadework.
The only downside to Fareham’s victory was the collar bone injury sustained by Steve Berryman, who expects to be sidelined for several weeks. Trojans, commendably, provided a substitute fielder when the injury occurred.
Fareham’s victory took them above Portsmouth & Southsea in the log and two wins clear of Lymington II, who lost by 63 runs at Purbrook, where Sean Figgins (86) and Martin Lee (58) shared a 123-run stand as the hosts made 258-7. Henry Edwards (67) responded in Lymington’s 195 all out.
