South Wilts seconds enhanced their prospects of British Gas Southern League Division 2 survival – and deepened Hambledon’s relegation plight – with a handsome 72-run win over their fellow strugglers at Bemerton.
They lost teenager Henry Smith at 32, but Owain Phillips (72) – his first half-century since May 2016 – took the initiative alongside Tom Berzins (31).
They wobbled a little at 165-5, but broke away through Joe Cranch (62) and Sam Pittman, who crashed two sixes and nine fours in scoring 66 off 41 balls to take SW to 276-6.
Hambledon were never a threat after slipping to 14-2 and were indebted to Will Bond (66) and Henry Glanfield (42) for their 212, Tom Bolam and Marc Burton taking two wickets each.
Former Hampshire opener Jason Laney top scored with 61 as St Cross Symondians II posted a match winning 218 at Paultons, who were bowled out for 146, Matt Perry-Lewis taking 4-22.
