Leaders South Wilts are suddenly casting an anxious glance or two over their shoulders as St Cross Symondians launch a late bid to whisk the ECB Southern Premier League leadership from under their noses.
The Winchester club is hot on South Wilts’ tails at the top going into the final five-match leg of ‘white ball’ 50-over cricket which begin tomorrow [Saturday].
Nine points currently separate the leading pair, whose head-to-head meeting at Bemerton on August 18 may well be a championship decider.
South Wilts began the last phase of all-day cricket with an 18-point lead, but had their position weakened when they were unable to force a victory over Alton.
They took the last seven Alton wickets for only 30 runs, but were unable to force a precious victory against the Brewers at Bemerton.
An injury to former Middlesex 2nd XI all-rounder Arthur Godsal (groin) and Joe Weld’s unavailability leads South Wilts to make changes for Lymington’s visit to Wilton Road, 12.30pm.
Joe Cranch is called up to beef up the top order batting against an unnamed Lymington side that has lost its last three games.
South Wilts: Hibberd, Morton, Cowley, Cranch, Wade, Draper, Mynott, Franklin, Evans, Murray, Warner.
Third placed Burridge are 12 points off top spot, but still much in the mix going into the home straight.
They are without skipper Rick Ankers for the visit of a more confident Basingstoke & North Hants to Botley Road.
Will Steward skippers the side, with Portsmouth Grammar School’s Oli Knight set to make his first appearance of the season.
Opener Joe Collings-Wells needs another 44 to complete his 500 runs for the season.
Basingstoke ended Burridge’s unbeaten start to the season in early June and, according to skipper Mitchell Stokes, are playing with a lot more confidence.
“We’ve begun to score runs as a team which is encouraging,” he said.
Burridge: Steward, Savident, Collings-Wells, Lock, De Abreu, Chowdhury, Stancliffe, Wright, White, Southon, McMurray.
Basingstoke & North Hants: Stokes, Thane, Jolley, Williamson, Mayhanya, Harsham, Neal, Griffiths, Benge, Thankachan, James.

New Milton, effectively one defeat away from relegation, have pinch hitter Toby Edwards back for the visit to Alton.
Teenager Raff Hussey is in good nick after three recent fifties, but Lee Beck’s absence will be significant.
New Milton: George Watts, Raff Hussey, James Haggaty, Toby Edwards, Ryan Beck, Tom Arnold, Josh Arnold, Campbell Golding, James Adams, Nick Gargaro, Olie Wilmore.
