Paultons anticipate a plum home tie against Havant in next month’s Southern Electric twenty20 Cup quarter-finals after knocking out Hook & Newnham Basics in a second round upset.
But Havant won’t be certain of coming to Whitemoor Lane on July 5 until they see off reinstated Gosport Borough in a delayed tie this Sunday.
The Premier Division 1 top dogs looked in control at the KGV after reaching 158-7 from their 20 overs, but Paultons batted excellently to win by eight wickets with more than an over to spare.
Having won the toss, Paultons elected to field and they made an important early breakthrough, the dangerous Jordan Hobday being caught for just two with eight on the board.
Fellow opener Ben Thane went on to make 29 but he was bowled and wickets fell regularly at the other end, leaving Hook in trouble at 46-5.
Captain Matt Love and Kieran Thomson turned things around, putting on 74 for the sixth wicket before Thomson was caught, having made 24 from 22 balls.
Love went on to reach 66 from 46 balls, an innings that included six fours and three sixes, as Hook ended their innings on 158.
That looked a decent total, but an opening stand of 94 between John Robinson and Nathan Feltham swung the match decisively the way of Paultons.
Feltham (38) was stumped off the bowling of Anik Divecha to give Hook the breakthrough, but Robinson went on to make 56 from 50 balls.
Wicket-keeper Chris Hall chipped in with an unbeaten 32 as the visitors hit the winning runs off the penultimate ball of the 19th
There were no such surprises alongside the Rapids, where the Hampshire Academy comfortably brushed aside Old Tauntonians & Romsey by 85 runs.
Hampshire all-rounder Chris Wood turned out for OTs, but went for 1-35 off his four overs and was caught after hitting his only scoring shot for six.
The Academy’s 175-7 was based around left-hander Ben Duggan (41) and Tom Alsop (27), with Ben Caldera hitting a lively 29 towards the end of the innings.
Romsey’s spin friendly track was heaven sent for Mason Crane (3-17), Brad Taylor ( 2-6) and Joe Weatherley (2-16), who bowled OTs out for 90.
The Academy’s victory has set up an intriguing quarter-final tie with Sarisbury Athletic, who six-hit their way out of trouble to beat New Milton by 48 runs.
Sarisbury, frequent t20 semi-finalists in recent seasons, were in some difficulty at 74-5 (Ricky Rawlins 31), but Dave Banks (50) and Sam Floyd simply hit their way out of trouble.
The pair struck six maximums and 12 fours in a rapid 78 stand which swung the game. Floyd hit 53 not out.
New Milton lost wickets far too regularly to mount a serious challenge and closed at 125-8.
Fawley were shot out for 62 and resoundingly beaten by nine wickets by Bashley (Rydal), who will host St Cross Symondians in the next round.
St Cross restricted Lymington to 140 (Ben Rogers 42) and then polished off the target with four overs to spare.
New Zealander Michard Pollard ran amok, smashing four sixes and six fours, making 62 off only 21 deliveries.
Basingstoke & North Hants bowed out after being bowled out for 114 and beaten by eight wickets by Liphook & Ripsley in front of a disappointed May’s Bounty crowd.
Put into bat, Basingstoke were never really able to get going throughout their innings, losing wickets at regular intervals, with just four batsmen getting into double figures.
Opener Craig Williamson (20) top-scored before being bowled by Charles Janczur (4-18).
They failed to bat out their overs, falling for 114 with 16 balls of their innings remaining, and Liphook had little problem knocking off the required runs.
Opening pair Suman Ganguly and Rob Nicklin put on 28 for the first wicket before Nicklin (15) was stumped by Laurence Benge off the bowling of Martyn James.
Ganguly and Giles Cover then produced a match-winning partnership of 74, taking the visitors to 102 before Ganguly (38) was caught and bowled by Matt Thankachan.
Cover went on to reach 40 not out, with Harry Munt finishing unbeaten on six as Liphook got over the line with almost five overs to spare.
Liphook will receive either cup holders South Wilts or Calmore Sports in the quarter-finals.
Havant and South Wilts host their delayed second round ties this Sunday against Gosport Borough and Calmore Sports, respectively.
The quarter-final draw is: Bashley (Rydal) v St Cross Symondians, Hampshire Academy v Sarisbury Athletic, Liphook & Ripsley v South Wilts or Calmore Sports, Paultons v Havant or Gosport Borough.
Dates for these ties will be confirmed later this week.
