BASHLEY (RYDAL) require 12 points from their remaining two matches (against Bournemouth and South Wilts) to secure the ECB Southern Premier League title. Standing (from left): Steve Wilson (coach), Ben Walker, George Pardoe, Bradley Currie, Ross Grierson, Tom Friend, Josh Digby. Kneeling: Tom Jacques, Alex Turner, George Wilson, Michael Porter, Tim Taylor.
As the penultimate round of Southern Premier League matches beckon, how are things shaping up at the top and bottom of the four divisions ?
SPL results secretary and stats supremo Stephen Jones has been burning the midnight oil and here are his findings -
Premier Division
Bashley (Rydal) need 12 points from their two remaining games to be confirmed as SPCL champions for the first time, even if St Cross Symondians get full points, so one win (at Bournemouth on Saturday ?) will certainly be enough, or even two high scoring losses.
Basingstoke & North Hants are confirmed as finishing bottom.
Premier Division – Overs Pennant
Still a number of teams in the mix, St Cross Symondians (at South Wilts on Saturday) are currently four points ahead.
Division 1
Hook & Newnham Basics need only two points from their two remaining games to be confirmed as Division 1 champions (they host Andover on Saturday), even if Sparsholt get full points. Portsmouth can no longer catch Hook & Newnham.
Ventnor have been confirmed as finishing bottom for a while. OTs & Romsey are eight points behind Calmore Sports, and realistically need one more win than Calmore to be safe. New Milton play both OTs and Calmore in the final 2 weeks and need 7 points from their 2 remaining games to be safe.
Division 2
Totton & Eling are confirmed as promoted (neither Paultons nor Liphook & Ripsley can catch them) and need 27 points (realistically 1 win and 1 high scoring loss) to be Division 2 champions, even if St Cross Symondians II two get full points.
St Cross Symondians II need 11 points from their two remaining games to join Totton & Eling as promoted. Paultons and Liphook & Ripsley need to win both their games and St Cross Symondians II to lose both their matches heavily. Paultons play Liphook on the last day.
Langley Manor are confirmed as finishing bottom. Any of the four teams in 6th to 9th (and even mathematically 5th) could also be relegated, depending on results.
Division 3
Bashley (Rydal) II are confirmed as promoted (neither Hambledon nor Hythe & Dibden can catch them) and need 17 points (realistically 1 win) to be Division 3 champions, even if Fawley get full points.
Fawley need 18 points from their 2 remaining games to join Bashley (Rydal) 2 as promoted.
Hambledon and Hythe & Dibden need to win both their games and Fawley to lose both their matches heavily. Fawley play both Hambledon and Hythe & Dibden in the final 2 weeks.
Lymington II have been confirmed as finishing bottom for a while. Any of the five teams in 5th-9th could also be relegated, depending on results.
Trojans, deducted five points for fielding an unregistered player (at Fareham) play Portsmouth & Southsea at St James’s Park on Saturday.
