Australian Sam O’Brien struck his first Southern Premier League century, hauling Sparsholt out of a pickle at 45-4 to set up an 86-run win over depleted Ventnor at the Norman Edwards Ground.
He hit a six and 22 fours in his maiden 126, sharing a 149-run fifth-wicket stand with teenager Liam Doran (68) after George Willis (4-50) and Zeph Wells had dismantled Sparsholt’s top order.
Despite their numerical deficiencies, Ventnor made a good fist of chasing down Sparsholt’s hefty 283, with Rob Snell (62 not out) and Neil Westhorpe (54) making half-centuries after Willis (42) had repaired the early damage. Ollie Perrin took 3-27. Ventnor were dismissed for 197.
