Openers Tom Foyle and Harry Came hit centuries as St Cross Symondians racked up a new ECB Southern Premier Division record score of 412-6 against a battered Bashley (Rydal) at the Green Jackets ground.
Foyle made 123 and Came 107, the pair sharing a 190-run first-wicket stand, setting up the base from which St Cross were able to secure a 146-run victory.
Bashley made a creditable 266-7 in reply, the 50-over affair producing a match aggregate of 678 runs for the loss of only 13 wickets – a huge compliment to retiring head groundsman Steve Oliphant.
In typical style, Foyle peppered the GJG boundary, hitting five sixes and 15 fours in an 87-ball stay at the crease – 96 of his 123 runs crossing the rope.
Came had just brought up his 50 when Foyle teed up the first of a trio of catches for Bashley coach Steve Wilson, but was equally content to play the support role as Hampshire’s Felix Organ struck five sixes in scoring 49 of the next 69 runs as St Cross moved relentlessly on to 259-2.
Brad Taylor (18) had been and gone by the time Came departed for 107 at 317-4, but worse was to follow for the Bashley bowlers with Ed Ellis smacking an unbeaten 65 off 31 deliveries, including three maximums.
The record St Cross total included 16 sixes and 39 fours – Dorset left-armer Ben Fletcher being struck for 113 off his ten overs. Fifteen year old leggie Ethan Baker emerged with 4-80.
Bashley had been totally batted out of the game, but they did manage to post 266-7 in reply, with Jacob Gordon (53) scoring his third fifty in his last four knocks.
Ben Francis (75) returned fire, but with Organ taking 3-37 and Came 2-6, the visitors were pegged to 266-7, 146 runs in arrears.
Statto's corner
There’s nothing better than a run fest and news of record breaking happenings to spark the Southern Premier League’s very own ‘Statto’ Stephen Jones (once grilled by Jeremy Paxman on tv’s University Challenge) into action !
‘Statto’ conform that St Cross Symondians are the first Premier Division team to record 400 in an innings, comfortably overhauling the previous highest score of 395-6 by South Wilts against the Hampshire Academy in 2015.
The St Cross Symondians v Bashley (Rydal) round 18 match has the largest aggregate (678) in the Premier Division, beating Hampshire Academy’s win over Hursley Park in 2006 (339-5 vs 313-7, 652 runs); the largest Timed aggregate is 644 runs, Hampshire Academy’s winning draw against T&E (347-5 vs 297-7, 644 runs).
Across all SPCL divisions, however, the St Cross v Bashley above aggregate is in only 4th place. The largest appear to be the following, all from divisions 1 or 2 – no Division 3 match has yet aggregated more than 600:
737 runs – Paultons (377-8) beat Hartley Wintney (360ao), 2010, SPL1, HW
730 runs – Burridge (408-4) beat Rowledge (322-9), 2013, SPL1, Rowledge
701 runs – Andover (412-4) beat Rowledge (289ao), 2010, SPL1, Rowledge
676 runs – Langley Manor (484-5) beat T&E II (192ao), 2014, SPL2, LM
672 runs – Hambledon (338-5) beat Hartley Wintney (334-9), 2016, SPL2, HW
666 runs – Langley Manor (335-5) beat Hartley Wintney (331-5), 2019, SPL2, HW.
