St Cross Symondians have swooped to sign influential Fair Oak all-rounder and captain Charlie Gwynn for the coming ECB Southern Premier League cricket season.
Gwynn, 22, has been Oak’s most outstanding player in recent seasons, scoring in excess of 1,000 runs and taking over 100 competitive wickets in Division 2 and 3 cricket, twice winning Premier League bowling awards.
Previously educated at Bradfield College and more recently Oxford Brookes University, Gwynn remained loyal to Fair Oak when he could have moved to a Premier Division club before now.
He says: “I’m very excited to start playing at St Cross and see how the higher level challenges me.”
He equipped himself well playing for Oxford UCCE against Nottinghamshire in a pre-season friendly last season, scoring 33 at Trent Bridge.
Charlie's sport playing father Andy has been a mainstay at Wickham throughout his career and, like his son, could arguably have played at a higher level.
Captain Ed Ellis is delighted Gwynn has joined St Cross, who finished runners-up to South Wilts in the Premier League last season, having been champions in 2018.
“Charlie offers a huge amount in all three key areas of the game,” Ellis said. “It’s been great to have him along to winter nets and there’s no doubt what he will offer both on and off the pitch.
“I have worked closely with him at Oxford MCCU where he proved the quality he has. We are very lucky to have him.”
St Cross begin outdoor training at the Green Jackets on April 9 before playing first and second team friendly matches against South Wilts (April 23) and Hook & Newnham Basics seven days later.
Their opening Premier Division match is against champions South Wilts at Bemerton on May 7.
